How does devaluing a currency help a government deal with it's national debt?
Considering Greece's current crisis, there is a lot of talk about how the country will cope with its debt.Of course, being a member of the EU, currency devaluation is not an option. Nevertheless, I'd very much like to understand why and how devaluing a currency helps a government deal with it's debt situation.I more or less understand the concept of currency devaluation in isolation how it happens and how it can effect imports exports. But I don't really understand how the issue helps the government pay down debt. Here is what I think happens....Lets say a country owes 1 Billion drachma just for example , and devalues its currency by half. That 1 Billion debt becomes easier to pay back since the government simply prints the cash. By printing 1 Billion drachma, the country can pay off its debt, however, the value of the currency will crash..Is that sort of right?
